Below are Mr. Tweedale's own words, which introduce his amazing statistics table as concerns his electronic edition of the Clementine Vulgate. [note the ascending size of the Pauline epistles, and the separation between the epistles and those which are pastoral. The whole Latin Vulgate Bible has 620,057 total words! Good stuff to know.]

Statistics

"In a project of such a great scale, I found it psychologically essential to keep detailed progress statistics, to have a number that I could see going up, letting me know that I really was making progress. The number I picked was the percentage completed (well, really two numbers: I recorded progress by chapters and printed pages)."

"Now that the whole thing is almost finished, I've collated various numerical facts about the Clementine text into the table below."

The first row has been added to Tweedale's table, it shows TOTALS from some English KJV, with its Apocrypha!

KJV statistics are from the 1959 Encyclopedia Americana, which used the compilations of Dr. Thomas Hartwell Horne (who spent 3 years tabulating these and other statistics).

The Book of Bible Lists, by H. L. Willmington, uses [without giving credit] the same statistics calculated by Horne.

Note: Horne's compilations were from an "old English Bible of the King James Version"; but a recent printed copy of the actual 1611 KJV (with modern type, (1993, Thomas Nelson Publishers)) , has 172 chapters total for its Apocrypha, whereas Horne shows 184 chapters in his copy. Still it is clear that the Vulgate translation uses far fewer words to communicate the original Greek and Hebrew. [GSD]
